Some sadness to start the day

On seeing a company you admire exclude disabled people.

Being disabled is hard. In the UK, a criminal low level of social care is killing us by the tens of thousands while we also make up 60% of COVID-19 deaths. Consider also that 1 in 10 suicides in England are linked to chronic illness, and it all looks a bit bleak, doesn’t it? Unable to attain support from a government that wants us dead, many of us feel stuck, unable to support ourselves and locked out of work. There are solutions that could rectify those issues, but they’re ignored for the sake of maintaining the status quo.

A few months ago, a prominent YouTube channel posted a job opportunity. It was a rare chance to join what appears to be a great team. I won’t name the channel, as the actual environment might be better than their ostensible attitude toward accessibility and without the full picture it does no one any favours singling out brands in this context.

The job was full-time and in-house. As with previous jobs postings, the channel made a point of dismissing any suggestion that the role could be engaged with in a remote capacity. This, although the team were working remotely at the time because of the pandemic.
